Everything revolves around the hubs!

Despite the simple looks of hubs, they are not a simple component. There are differences in the over-locknut-dimension (O.L.D), axle diameter, the bearings, the spoke hole count, freehub type, and the brake mount (6-bolt, center lock, or none). On top of that, there are dynamo hubs for MTB, City &Touring bikes, and road bikes. How do you find the one you need?

The hub should match your riding style and bike. For example, you are searching for a hub for your City & Touring bike which needs strong wheels because it transports luggage and heavy loads. The strength of a wheel starts at the hub; the more spokes the better. That means that from the start you need to know what spoke hole count the hub should have. The spoke hole count ranges between 20 and 36 holes. Because most of the luggage on a City & Touring bike is loaded on the back, the rear wheel should be more stable than the front wheel. An example would be 28 spokes for the front wheel and 32 for the rear wheel.

Whether you choose cartridge or cup and cone bearings is more of a philosophical question. Cup and cone bearings handle side loads better and bearing play can be adjusted, but cartridge bearings are easier to change.

Another practical invention for City & Touring bikes are internal gear hubs. Because the cogs and the shifting mechanics are hidden the hub, this shifting systems is extremely durable and easy to care for. Change the oil every so often and you are done.

Additionally, you should keep the freehub in mind. What type of drivetrain do you have? If you ride Campagnolo then you need a Campa freehub so that the cassette fits. All other brands use the Shimano standard. The question of the right freehub is not only a question for road bikes. With 11-speed or higher cassettes MTB need special freehubs too, e.g. an XD.
