Shimano Dura Ace FC-R9100-P power meter crankset - the latest generation in power measurement

The Dura Ace FC-R9100-P crankset is Shimano's first power meter, developed in collaboration with bikefitting.com, a Shimano subsidiary specialising in bicycle ergonomics. The device measures the power in the crankarm, separately for left and right leg. The cadence and other values important for the training, such as pedal stroke, are also determined. The power meter can be paired with displays that are ANT+ or Bluetooth enabled. The FC-R9100-P crank thus helps to measure and record performance in real time and enables subsequent evaluation of the performance data. Just like the " normal" FC-R9100 without power measurement, the power meter crank is a Hollowtech crank with hollow forged aluminium arms and Hollowtech II construction for optimum stiffness to weight ratio. The large chainring was also hollowed to save weight (Hollowglide).

Technology:

Hollowtech
A lightweight crankset not only reduces the bike's weight, but decreases rotating mass to aid in acceleration. The challenge is to reduce the weight of the crank without reducing its strength and rigidity. Shimano's advanced forging technology has solved the problem through the Hollowtech crank. Just like high quality frame tubing, a hollow crank arm can provide amazing strength and rigidity at very light weight.

Hollowtech II
The concept of the Hollowtech II technology was focused on the production of an optimised crankset that minimises the rider's effort for the ride. The high rigidity of the crankset ensures efficient power transmission when pedalling, while its low weight relieves the rider, especially over longer distances. The crankset was developed wanted to achieving an optimum ratio between stiffness, rotational efficiency, low weight and attractive appearance. Hollowtech technology enables extremely lightweight, hollow crankarms, manufactured using Shimano's exclusive forging technology, to achieve maximum stiffness. In addition, with the Hollowtech II crankset the right crank is firmly connected to the axle of the bottom bracket, achieving an optimum balance between maximum stiffness and minimum weight. The externally mounted bottom bracket offers better weight distribution and stability for more efficient power transmission.

Hollowglide
Hollow outer chainring: The extremely stiff hollow structure reduces the weight while maintaining the same strength. Better power transmission and faster, more precise front shifts.

Powermeter
The Powermeter's " brain" , the central unit, is located in the crankcase of the Dura Ace crankset, while the strain gauges are integrated in the crankarms. This way, they can record the performance separately on each side. The central unit is really compact and, discreetly mounted behind the chainrings, really inconspicuous. This makes this system one of the lightest and best integrated systems on the market. This construction furthermore allows an easy chainring switch without compromising the accuracy of the power meter. To carry out system checks and firmware updates, Shimano´s new E-tube-platform enables remarkably simple Bluetooth communication with your smartphone or tablet devices. To allow communication and data representation on a larger number of bicycle computers or GPS devices, the powermeter crankset has ANT+ as well as Bluetooth. An integrated, rechargeable battery supplies the power meter with energy. Charging is performed through small magnetic adapters which allow the weather resistance to be kept up at all times, as no coverings or lids have to be opened.
