Shimano Saint disc brake set BR-M820 - ultimate power for DH

The Shimano Saint BR-M820 disc brake set (front + rear) features powerful 4-piston calipers with ceramic pistons that make it the ultimate Downhill and Gravity brake. Thanks to Ice Technologies, the system does not overheat and the braking performance remains constant even on the most difficult descents. One-Way Bleeding also allows the calipers to be quickly and easily bled. On the brake lever side, the BL-M820-B Servo Wave, a design for better modulation of the braking force, and the I-Spec integration option for shifters and brake levers, score points.

Servo Wave
When you pull a Servo Wave brake lever, initial pad travel is fast, so little lever movement is needed to bring the pads into contact with the rotor. The power multiplication factor then increases rapidly at the pad-to-rim contact so more of the lever stroke is used to apply greater braking power with improved control.

Integration mounting system of shifter and brake lever. It can realise clean appearance, more space for the handle bar area and lightweight.
Note: The I-Spec brake levers have a new mount as of 2014 (Version B). First of all, there is no compatibility with shifter with old I-Spec mounts. However, these can be made compatible with the new I-Spec brake levers using the new I-Spec adapters (SM-SL98-B for XTR, SM-SL78-B for XT and SLX, SM-SL82-B for Saint). There is no compatibility with I-Spec II or I-Spec EV.

One-Way-Bleeding was developed for quick and easy prevention of air in Shimano's hydraulic system. They have streamlined the oil route throughout the system to prevent air bubbles from being captured in the system.
One way oil routing plus a funnel tool with mineral oil provides an easy and clean bleeding system.

Brake fading during prolonged uninterrupted operation, e.g. downhill, impairs braking performance. Shimano has introduced brake discs and pads with Ice-Tech technology to create a cooling technology for consistently high braking performance. The brake rotor has a three-layer stainless steel sandwich structure on the outside around an aluminium core. It radiates heat better and reduces a surface temperature from 400° C to 300° C, for example. The brake pads also have optional cooling fins. The design of the rotor in combination with the cooling fins results in a longer service life of the pads, less braking noise, less fading and a lower weight.
XTR, Saint, Deore XT, SLX, Zee, Deore LX calipers are bundled with Ice Technology pistons in order to achieve optimized lightweight, high rigidity and heat dissipation. Oversized pistons transfer hydraulic power directly to the brake pad, and ceramic material is used to avoid heat transfer for constant stable braking, providing efficient stopping power transfer without loss.

I love these. Both the operation of the brake as well as the short, comfortable handles.

I have now compared the Saint M820 to a set of Hope Tech 3 V4 which is another contender for the title of the best DH brakes in the world. Test bikes where a 18.5kg Mondraker Summum 2013 downhill bike and a 13.5kg Mondraker Foxy 2011 trail bike.
Saint M820:
+ Stronger
+ One finger is enough for full brake power.
+ Stops the bike faster
- The window where you have 80-100% and 50-70% brake power is small and takes practise.
- Less good in turns, as a small mistake will cause a locked front wheel.
Hope Tech 3 V4:
+ Almost as strong as the Saint M820. It will reach full stop, it just takes a bit more effort.
+ Less chance to panic brake and lock the front wheel in turns.
+ Many degrees of braking power, I can choose between 35 and 45% braking power easily.
- Needs two fingers and sometimes three fingers to make full stop from high speed.
I ended up using Hope Tech 3 V4 on the Summum downhill bike and the Saint M820 on the Foxy trail bike. My riding on downhill tracks is a bit more dangerous and I don't want to risk to lock the front wheel and break my back on some rocks.
