Simply rolling over obstacles – the right kind of rear shock makes it possible!

The rear shock is one of the most important parts of a full-suspension mountain bike. There are two types of shocks: air-spring and coil-spring shocks. Air-spring shocks are lighter and are commonly used in Cross-Country and Enduro MTBs. Shocks with a steel or titanium coil are mainly used for Freeride and Downhill bikes. They are more robust, but also heavier than air-spring rear shocks.

A rear shock system has to perform various tasks. It has to absorb slow and fast bumps without bottoming out while also providing sufficient travel. In addition, the shock should allow for fast rebound so it can absorb a series of bumps like roots. On the other hand, rebound should not be too quick as the rear wheel could lose contact with the ground, which would result in a loss of traction and control.

The adjustability of high speed and low speed compression and dampening does not depend on the intended purpose of a rear shock, but on the technical specifications, which ultimately translate into a higher price. The more sophisticated a shock absorber, the more expensive it gets. Before you purchase a rear shock for your frame, make sure the sizing specifications are correct. Shocks have different lengths depending on the frame. The same is true for the width of the air chamber or the coil. Some small frames simply don’t have enough room for a large shock.

Every rear shock has to be maintained and serviced frequently. We offer a great variety of cleaning products and replacement parts so you can ensure your rear shock is performing at its best.
