Technology:

IQ Technology
The light revolution from busch+müller: a special reflector with an optimised cooling system uses a high-performance LED as an indirect light source. The LED is not visible any longer in the middle of the reflector. This creates a light field that is extremely evenly illuminated and can be twice as wide as conventional technology. Light effects can be positioned more precisely - for example, the near field in front of the front wheel can be additionally brightened.

Standing Light
This innovation by busch+müller from the nineties has become the safety standard. The additional " plus" indicates that standing lights are integrated into the equipment. Neither batteries nor rechargeable batteries are required for the standing light. This is how it works: As soon as the bike is stationary, an LED standing light is supplied with power by a maintenance-free capacitor. The capacitor charged itself during the journey.

By the way: The standing light of the Lumotec headlights can run for many minutes. This is why the standing lights on Lumotec IQ models can also be switched off manually - so that no thief is tempted when the bicycle is parked.

Automatic Sensor
If a Lumotec front light has the addition of " sensor" in its name, it can switch on automatically at dusk or in the dark, and switches off automatically when driving in the light. For this to happen, a permanent power supply by a hub dynamo is required. To prevent the sensor from reacting " incorrectly" to short-term light signals like a car headlight, it is equipped with a delay. The sensor function can also be switched off. In the case of front lights with daytime running light function, the light sensor takes over the task of automatically switching between day and night modes.

Near Field Illumination
For a safe ride it is very important to have a good view of the area immediately ahead of the front wheel. Bumps, obstacles, potholes in this " near field" are easily perceived in the light and are avoided by short, intuitive steering movements. In the dark, this is only possible if the area right in front of the bike is brightly and evenly illuminated. Subjectively, the need for a bright near-field increases the slower your speed is, because your balance will be increasingly threatened by possible obstacles.

This is the first dynamo light I've ever bought. I chose it based on features, reviews and price. Output is 80 lux. Higher/newer models put out 100 lux, but double the price, which I didn't think was worth it. Also, higher model has plast mount which reviewers said breaks. this IQ Premium's bracket is metal.

I have used it for 6 weeks now, both at home and on a 3 week overseas 450km tour.

As a "to be seen" light, it is excellent.

It is a wide light, compared to most battery/USB lights, and it shines light not just forwards, but downwards and sideways. Downwards light illuminates the front tyre and fork arms, and light scatter also shows up my lower legs too. The plastic front lens casing is clear on the edges, so the light can be seen on the sides too. It's not just a pinpoint of bright light, it lights up almost the whole front of my bike. Took me by surprise first time I saw it. Far better than any Moon/Cateye front light, or proper flashlight which don't do this.

As a light to see the road in front of you, it's ok:

I compared it to my Klarus ST 12 flashlight, which has 900/400/80 lumen settings. My layman opinion is the Lumotec Premium light is perhaps 300 lumens, as it's a bit dimmer than the Klarus's 400 lumen setting. However, the flashlight focuses all the light in the middle, whereas the Lumotec Premium spreads the light across perhaps a 60 degree arc, side to side, not middle straight in front to side. The light is also quite evenly spread, except for this odd rectangle bit at the front of the light. The light can also be angled to illuminate far in front ( I have it about...20m?) and it's relatively well lit. The wide spread is quite useful.

The Lumotec is not an ultra bright floodlight by any stretch, b ut if it's dark, it's far far better than cycling in pitch black.

I have to say that I do not understand the two "on" settings on the on/off dial. The dial is great- large and easy to turn and grasp. But I can't tell the difference between the two.

I read this week there's a 1300 lumen dynamo light called kLite BACKPACKER ULTRA MTB Pro. But it's USD $300. Until prices come down, I'll stick with the Lumotec Premium :)

So 5 stars, for what it is. Not perfect though- better instruction manual, brighter light would be great.
