Questions & Answers

What belongs in a basic bicycle repair kit?

A basic bicycle repair kit should include tire levers, a patch kit or spare inner tube, a mini pump, and a multitool with the most common hex key sizes. For chain issues, a quick link (master link) or a small link plier can be very useful. A small pair of scissors or a knife can help with minor repairs. On longer tours, it’s a good idea to add spare spokes, a derailleur hanger, and the correct wrench for your bike. For extra peace of mind, include some first-aid supplies, a few zip ties, and a bit of cash.

Multitool or individual tools – which is better for on-the-go repairs?

In most cases, a multitool is the better choice for on-the-go repairs. It combines the most important tools – such as hex keys, Torx, screwdrivers, and often a chain breaker – into a compact format, saving both space and weight. This is especially convenient for short rides or commuting.
Individual tools can make sense if you know exactly which tools you need and place high value on ergonomics or durability – for example, on longer bikepacking adventures or if repairs are more likely. For casual rides, a good multitool is usually more than enough.

Do I need a chain breaker on every ride?

Not necessarily – it depends on the type of ride. On short city rides or when help is easily accessible, a chain breaker is usually not essential.
For longer tours, MTB rides, or gravel adventures, a multitool with an integrated chain breaker – or a separate chain tool – is highly recommended. A broken chain can be repaired on the spot, especially when combined with a matching quick link.
Bottom line: A chain breaker is worth bringing on remote rides – but not really necessary for a quick evening spin.

How does a tubeless repair kit (plugs) work?

A tubeless repair kit quickly seals small holes in a tubeless tire without removing it. Using the included tool – usually a fork-style or needle-style insertion tool – a rubbery strip (the “plug”) is pushed directly into the hole.
The plug stays in place and seals the hole, often instantly. You can continue riding right away – perfect for cuts that sealant alone can’t fix. Some kits include a small reamer or glue, but they can work without them.
In short: insert the plug, pump up, and keep riding.

CO₂ pump or hand pump – which is the better choice for me?

CO₂ pumps are extremely fast and compact – perfect for races or short rides where every second counts. Downsides: they only work with cartridges (single-use), and performance can drop in cold temperatures.
Hand pumps are more reliable and reusable – ideal for longer rides, bikepacking, or when you want to stay self-sufficient. They take more time and effort but are often the safer choice in the long run.

Which tools do I need for a flat tire?

For a flat tire, you’ll need a few essential tools to get rolling again quickly: tire levers to remove the tire from the rim, a patch kit or spare inner tube for the repair, a mini pump or CO₂ cartridges to reinflate the tire, and a multitool for any necessary adjustments. With these tools, you’ll be well-prepared to fix most flats on the road yourself.
