Like all Shimano chainrings, it has been designed to function smoothly in conjunction with the other front drivetrain components (HyperDrive concept).

The type designation (one or two characters) helps identify the compatibility of various chainrings with other chainrings. Because the larger chainrings have specially-formed teeth and upward shifting assistance, only particular smaller chainrings will match to ensure proper shifting performance. An XY chainring should only be combined with another XY chainring. This applies to all other types as well.
