Shimano WH-RX880-TL 28" wheelset for 12-speed - highest transmission efficiency for off-road adventures

The WH-RX880-TL carbon wheels for gravel use feature Shimano Direct Engagement technology or Micro Spline technology for improved drive rigidity. They are therefore ideal for you if you want to use a road or MTB cassette with 12 sprockets on your off-road adventures or in gravel races. The WH-RX880 fit perfectly with the GRX RX820 groupset, but they have a neutral branding with Shimano logo. The robust wheelset is designed for demanding terrain and unpaved roads and is almost 65 grams lighter than the WH-RX870 model. The 25 mm wide, tubeless-compatible rims allow tyres up to 50 mm wide. A rim height of only 32 mm supports fast acceleration and agility on climbs. Torsionally stiff and, thanks to the cup-and-cone bearings, very maintenance-friendly E-Thru thru-axle hubs for center lock brake rotors are used. They were spoked with 24 cranked, double-butted stainless steel spokes and weight-saving aluminium nipples.

Technology:

Cup and Cone Bearings
Angular contact ball bearings of the cup & cone type are superior to sealed cartridge bearings in terms of load carrying capacity, as they distribute lateral and vertical forces better, and thus run particularly smoothly and last a long time. They are also easier to adjust, maintain and replace.

E-Thru
E-Thru is a tool-free thru-axle system from Shimano that optimises the stiffness-to-weight ratio and ensures easy handling via its reliable internal cam mechanism. It is characterised by a high torsion resistance and thus also supports cornering at high speed. E-Thru thru-axle hubs and thru-axles are available in the corresponding over locknut dimensions for front and rear.

Direct drive (Direct Engagement)
The Shimano Direct Engagement freehub is a ratchet freehub, which has the advantage of a much larger contact area compared to pawl systems. This leads to more drive rigidity. Thanks to its spiral shape, the outer and hub ratchet also engage firmly. This results in highly efficient and reliable energy transmission.

Micro Spline
Micro Spline is an innovative tooth profile on MTB freehub bodies from Shimano. All Shimano 12-speed MTB cassettes with a 10-tooth sprocket are equipped with Micro Spline freehub toothing. The significantly higher and finer toothing enables a stiffer connection between the cassette and the hub body. The resulting increased contact area ensures reliable power transmission, minimises wear and prevents deformation of the freehub and sprocket.
