Zipp 454 NSW Disc Center Lock Carbon Clincher Wheel
The shapt of the future combined with current brake technology: the 454 NSW Disc wheel by Zipp<\/h2>
Zipp's engineers have equipped the bionic-inspired 454 NSW with ultimate brake control under all conditions - namely with disc brakes. For the first time ever, an NSW wheel is available with disc brakes, giving the cyclist the greatest AeroBalance™ combined with the superior modulation and braking power of disc brakes.
The Zipp 454 NSW Disc Carbon Clincher features radical design and evolutionary nature. In nature, living creatures improve their competitiveness over generations. This natural design process is called adaptation - new shapes achieve a higher degree of efficiency and control. Using the principles of bionics, Zipp engineers searched their environment for examples of how nature solves similar problems of speed, control and efficiency to develop the next generation of Zipp wheels.
Just think of the fast yet graceful movements of a humpback whale, the special features on the front of its pectoral fins, or the unique microtexture of a shark's skin that allows it to glide through water effortlessly. These structures have inspired Zipp's development engineers to systematically apply bionics for the first time in order to master the great challenge of designing an wheel with lower aerodynamic resistance and reduced sideways wind forces.
Zipp took its cue from nature and began the rigorous development process of the 454 NSW Disc with the help of wind tunnels, numerical fluid mechanics and practical tests. The result is a 53/58 mm wavy rim shape that combines the most elegant design solutions from nature with technical precision to create a wheel that is second to none.

Technology:
NSW stands for "Nest Speed Weaponry". 'The Nest' is the nickname the Zipp engineers have given to the windowless high-security research laboratory in a corner of the Zipp factory. This site, or the ground-breaking ideas and designs that emerged from it, became the namesake for an entire series of wheels. The Zipp NSW series is a science, philosophy and mission to develop the fastest, most stable and highest performing wheel components of all times.
ImPress™
The Impress graphics not only provide valuable weight savings, but also enable unique and permanent application of the four letters most feared by the competition in bicycle racing: Z-I-P-P.
SawTooth™
The most visually appealing and functionally significant innovation in the handmade 454 NSW is the SawTooth technology. This patented rim shape achieves what conventional aero wheels cannot: it simultaneously reduces aerodynamic drag and lateral wind forces, providing the ultimate AeroBalance.
SawTooth makes this possible through a series of hump-shaped Hyperfoil points along the inner diameter of the rim. Together with the HexFin ABLC dimples (hexagonal dimples), these provide improved airflow. The result is the most performant Zipp wheelsetof all timeswith lower aerodynamic drag and reduced lateral wind forces at any angle of attack. This is important because the steeper the wind angle, the larger the influence on the handling of the bike.
