The Shimano XT front derailleurs FD-M8025 and FD-M8020 - from classic to innovative

The Shimano XT front derailleurs FD-M8020 and FD-M8025 shift two chainrings in the 11-speed Mountain bike drivetrain and contribute significantly to the DynaSys11 performance. The FD-M8025 is a model with classic cable routing (dual-pull or down-pull) and conventional construction (down-swing or top-swing), while the FD-M8020 features innovative side-swing technology and the associated front-pull routing. These provide a higher shifting force and even more tyre clearance. Mounting options include clamp mounts, direct mount and E-type for both models.

Technology:

Dyna-Sys11
Dyna-Sys11 is the name of the 11-speed shifting system for MTBs from Shimano. The focus lies on maintaining the pedalling rhythm both on flat ground and on uphill segments. The gear ratios are selected so that you make efficient progress in the most frequently used gear range and do not have to shift gears as much (" Rhythm Step" ).

Side-Swing
The Shimano Side-Swing front derailleurs are controlled from the front (Front-Pull), which allows for much more efficient cable routing. This significantly improves shifting performance, especially when shifting to the large chainring - with lower operating forces. Other advantages include increased tyre clearance thanks to the slimmed-down design and noise reduction thanks to the optimised chainstay angle. In addition, Side-Swing technology favours the construction of frames with shorter chainstays, which simplify the control of the bike.

In combination with the XT chainrings of the same series, the shifts are as good ans as fast as with the rear derailleur --which is not necessarily surprising, since MTB chainrings are now significantly smaller than what you find in a cassette...

But what I really want to write here is: maybe I am discovering hot water, but this derailleur (and therefore all its sister products above and below) work flawlessly with the last generation of Shimano STIs (2x front), without adapters or any hackery. It's plug and play. So no needof Di2 or AXS or other very expensive componentry to run a MTB crankset and front derailleur with STIs, if you want to do a gravel build with a frame that does not accept road cranks. Or you simply want the small chainrings.
