Specialized Tarmac SL8 Expert Carbon Road Bike
The Tarmac SL8 in the Expert configuration with SRAM Rival eTap AXS 12-speed groupset and disc brakes is the most aerodynamic road bike Specialized has ever built. With its tapered head tube front, the so-called Speed Sniffer, and the super narrow seat post, it promotes a constant air flow and ensures less air turbulence. That's why the Tarmac SL8 is even more aerodynamic than the legendary Venge and 16.6 seconds faster over 40 kilometres than its predecessor, the SL7.
Of course, the aero performance does not come at the expense of weight: the frame weighs just 780 grams and the bike is close to the UCI weight limit even with a full aero setup. Thanks to more efficient load distribution on the down tube, seat tube and rear, the SL8 has less carbon layers, making it 15 % lighter than the SL7. This means riding fun not only in the mountains.
Acceleration and comfort go hand in hand with the Tarmac: the stiffness-to-weight ratio has been improved by 33%, which ensures perfect handling and direct response behaviour. The bike is stiffer at the bottom bracket, more precise in the steering and 6% more compliant on the saddle, just as you would want in competition. In keeping with the Specialized Rider First Engineered philosophy, attention was also paid to the optimal carbon layup for each individual frame size. Naturally, the geometry of the Tarmac SL8 is equally suitable for men and women and was developed with feedback from Tour de France winner Demi Vollering and world champion Remco Evenepoel.

Technology:
FACT is an acronym for "Functional Advanced Composite Technology" and summarises all the know-how that Specialized has in the use of carbon fibre. It is a holistic approach, which primarily concerns the bike frames, but is found in many components such as handlebars, stems, saddles etc. The starting point is always the awareness for the needs of riders and the capability to fulfil them. Next, the selection of fibres, resins and fabric layers takes place; in this process the quality of the carbon and the arrangement of the fibre layers play an important role. It is important to find the right set-up for the project at hand and the intended location or rather the area of application. It is often necessary to differentiate from model to model at several points. In the final step, attention is paid to processing the material in a way that allows the desired advantages in terms of low weight, rigidity and stability to be achieved.
Rider-First Engineered
Rider-First Engineered describes the design approach used by Specialized to precisely match each frame size to the target group. Simply put, smaller frames for smaller riders are built in a different way than larger frames for larger riders. This is done on the basis of performance parameters determined in practical tests, taking into account the forces acting on different areas of the bike when riders of different sizes ride it. Based on this analysis, the optimum tube dimensions and the appropriate carbon fibre covering for the respective frame size are determined. This way you can be sure that no matter what your height is, you will receive a bike that delivers optimal and controllable performance suited to your size.
Aerodynamic Expertise from Specialized
"Aero is everything" is not an empty slogan at Specialized. Their engineers rely on decades of experience in aero design, and use a variety of state-of-the-art methods in the developing top aero racing machines. Central to this, of course, is the wind tunnel ("Win Tunnel") at the company's headquarters in California, which is available for round-the-clock testing. It is specially designed to meet the requirements of cyclists and typical situations in road cycling, such as team time trials or riding in a group. The development process always begins with the FreeFoil Shape Library, a collection of countless tube shapes and structures which helps engineers figure out the most interesting configurations for wind tunnel testing. But one does not always have to analyse actual objects. There is also Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which uses computer simulations to experiment with aerodynamic properties. Specialized also makes use of the Data Acquisition System (DAQ), which collects data such as a rider's power, speed, riding position and wind angle of incidence during practical tests on the road or in the velodrome. In turn, conclusions can be drawn from all this information for use in bike fittings and fine tuning.
