The right tension is crucial: Gates' UT Spring Tension Tester
For optimal function of the Gates Carbon Drive System, correct belt tension is essential. Too low belt tension can lead to " slipping" , where the teeth of the belt slip over the teeth of the rear sprocket. Too much tension can cause damage to the rear hub bearing, sluggishness and increased wear on your drive system.
The belt tension adjustment varies depending upon the bicycle. Common tension adjustment systems include inclined or vertical dropouts, horizontally sliding dropouts (not recommended by Gates) and eccentric bottom brackets.
The Spring Tension Tester measures the tension of each Gates Carbon Drive Belt in any position.
The Spring Tension Tester consists of a ruler, a pointer and a finger. Place the ruler on the belt above both sprockets. This changes the position of the finger and shifts the pointer on the scale. The finger is pretensioned by a spring. The resulting deflection of the belt is a measure of the existing belt tension. Now you can read the current belt tension using the pointer. The Spring Tension Tester makes it possible to measure the belt tension in the loaded and return strand.
The colour code (green, yellow or red) indicates the belt tension. Red means that the belt tension is too low. Yellow means that the belt tension is too high. Green means that the belt tension is optimal.
Before each measurement the pointer must be moved back to its original position (below the red area).
During tension adjustment, the correct alignment of the belt must be maintained.
The belt tension measurement should be repeated at different crank positions. If different belt tensions occur, this is an indication that the front sprocket is not mounted concentrically to the crank axle.
Tension recommendations for Gates Carbon Drive are as follows:
- Off-road and urban - soft and even step style: 40-60 Hz (35-45 lbs)
- Off-road and urban - strong and hard stepping style: 60-75 Hz (45-53 lbs)
- Internally geared hubs: 35-50 Hz (28-40 lbs)
- Tandem: 60-65 Hz (45-48 lbs)
- Shimano STEPS: 35-45 Hz (28-35 lbs)
